Exciting Off-Label Uses for Botox

Botox is one of the most popular cosmetic procedures in the world, including at Enhance® Medical Center. Our patients love Botox injections because of their ability to minimize fine lines and wrinkles. In most cases, Botox is used to temporarily immobilize facial muscles so that these lines have a chance to soften on the skin. The FDA has approved Botox to be used on the forehead, between the eyebrows and at the corners of the eyes where crow’s feet form.

However, Botox also has a variety of safe, off-label uses, including treating migraines, TMJ, sweating and acne. Here, Dr. Charles S. Lee and the team at Enhance® explain how Botox works in these situations.

Migraines

Studies have repeatedly found that Botox injections can play a significant role in moderating the incidence of headaches among chronic migraine sufferers. Experts believe Botox has this effect because it blocks the neurotransmitters that send pain signals to your brain. With the message impeded, you may be able to mitigate pain or avoid it altogether. It is a popular choice among patients who want to treat their wrinkles and migraines simultaneously.

TMJ

Botox also offers relief to patients who experience jaw pain. For TMJ, however, relief is not only due to blocking pain signals. Botox also relaxes the tense muscles in the jaws. After a few months, most patients notice increased mouth mobility.

Sweating

If you suffer from excessive sweating (aka hyperhidrosis), Botox may provide you with relief. It works by impeding the chemicals that trigger your body to perspire. One treatment session (which usually includes a couple dozen injections) can limit your sweat for three to four months.

Though the area commonly targeted is the armpits, some patients have found success using Botox on the palms and soles. It may even be covered by insurance, provided that other, more conventional treatment methods have failed to produce quality results.

Acne

Dermatologists have started using Botox to prevent acne outbreaks. Injections are placed strategically in areas of the face that produce the most sebum oil. Botox then dramatically decreases the production of this acne-triggering oil. Even better, by relaxing the muscles that cause acne scars to pucker, Botox can also diminish the appearance of acne scars.

At Enhance® Medical Center, we offer a variety of skin treatments that address acne, some of which may be more effective. After assessing your skin type and learning your goals, our aestheticians can devise an appropriate treatment plan.
