The eyes are one of the most noticeable features on the face and are even thought by many to be the “window to the soul.” As one of the most common cosmetic procedures in the world, it should come as no surprise that more than 200,000 eyelid surgeries were performed in 2013.
Although a large number of these surgeries were made up of traditional blepharoplasty procedures, another type of blepharoplasty has gained an increased amount of popularity. Known as “Asian eyelid surgery,” this blepharoplasty technique is desired by men and women of Asian descent who wish to improve the appearance of the eyes by enlarging a fold or creating a fold when one does not exist.
Candidates
Candidates for Asian eyelid surgery are in good overall health and have realistic expectations about the outcome of the procedure. They may have excess skin and fat in the eye area or desire a more noticeable fold in their upper eyelids.
The unique condition of the individual’s eyelids will determine which technique is performed for his or her surgery.
Open Technique
The open technique is performed when hooding exists in the upper eyelids or when the eyelid skin is very thick. Another reason for performing this technique is when the patient has inadequate upper eyelid elevation.
Suture Technique
The suture technique uses a specialized fiber stitch that holds the skin in the upper eyelids in place. It is intended for patients with thinner skin and stronger eye muscles.
At his Beverly Hills practice, Dr. Charles Lee also utilizes the Double Suture and Twisting (DST) technique because it is a more sophisticated method to that offers his patients advantages over other techniques.
Benefits of the DST technique over other blepharoplasty methods include:
-
Scarless
-
More natural creases
-
Quicker recovery time
