3 Minute Read:

Asian eyelid surgery, also known as Asian blepharoplasty, is a cosmetic surgical procedure often performed to create a natural-looking crease in the upper eyelid, consequently improving the eye’s definition. The procedure might also involve removing excess tissue to improve drooping upper eyelids and increase peripheral range of vision (hindered by the excess tissues).

Here is what you need to know about Asian eyelid surgery.

How Old Should I Be to Get Asian Eyelid Surgery?

Unlike traditional (Caucasian) blepharoplasty, Asian blepharoplasty is not solely performed to address unwanted signs of aging.

Because Asian eyelid surgery, also called double eyelid surgery, revolves around creating the crease in the upper eyelid, skin and tissue laxity has very little to do with it. Therefore, patients do not need to be at a more advanced age traditionally expected for eyelid surgery candidacy.

Candidates for Asian eyelid surgery should be healthy adults who are physically and emotionally prepared to undergo surgery and can take the necessary time for recovery.

Dr. Lee does not perform this surgery on any patient under the age of 16.

A good candidate also needs to understand what the procedure entails and what can practically be achieved. In other words, you need to do your research and talk to your plastic surgeon to have realistic expectations. Last but not least, your skin needs to be moderately elastic, and you should have no underlying medical conditions that would hinder healing.

What Does the Procedure Entail?

There are two ways in which Asian eyelid surgery is performed. One involves making an incision, while the other involves using sutures (threads) only.

An incision is needed if excess skin and tissue need to be removed before creating a fold. The incision is usually made along the curvature of the eyelid. This is quite an involved method, and therefore, it will take about one hour.

On the other hand, the non-incisional eyelid surgery suturing technique is preferred when there is no excess skin or tissue to be removed. In this technique, your plastic surgeon will weave a thread along the upper eyelid that will create an eyelid crease and hold your eyelid’s new shape securely.

Non-incisional eyelid surgery is reversible.

How Long Is the Recovery After Asian Eyelid Surgery?

The recovery depends on the technique used. If you go for the incision technique, swelling could persist for a couple of weeks, but the results will become apparent after several months.

On the other hand, if you choose to go for the sutures’ technique, the swelling will be minimal, and the recovery much quicker since the procedure is less invasive.
